For the first time, as part of the GCHWC’s annual “Summer Daze” cookout / race event, the club held a special custom contest centered around Mattel’s newest hot casting, the Kool Kombi. This casting, based on a shortened 60’s VW bus, has attracted the eye of many collectors and was released in green, orange and white.
For this contest, members submitted their own customs based on the Kool Kombi in two categories… Mild (paint, wheel swaps, stickers, etc) and Wild (chop, add parts, switch components). There were 8 entries overall and our panel of non-biased judges (ok…well, at least they didn’t have entries in the contest) had a tough time picking a winner.
Judges checking out the entries…
Deb’s dye’d Pink Panther Kombi
Tom’s gold entry in the foreground and Tim’s “tire-hauler” white entry in the back…
Dave’s Batman (go figure!) flavored Kombi:
The top three entrants (belonging to Tom, Deb and Dave) were then asked to persuade the membership why their entry should win with a brief presentation…
In the end, after the votes had been tallied, Tom’s gold Kombi with tricked out interior and detailed chassis won out over the competition. Nice work, Tom!
As an added bonus after the competition, all the entrants went home with a custom… but not their own. All the names went into a hat and each person drew a name at random and took that entry home as a souvenir.
